About the Team
Sue Hayden, specialist teacher and Emma Jordan, specialist speech and language therapist joined forces in 2000. Together they have developed the Language for Learning training courses, resources and publications.
Sue is a specialist teacher for the Learning Support Team - Access & Inclusion Service within Worcestershire County Council. Emma is a specialist speech and language therapist for the Wyre Forest Speech & Language Therapy Team within Worcestershire Primary Care Trust.
Language for learning is committed towards developing collaborative practice between speech and language therapists, teachers and parents in order to meet the needs of children experiencing speech, language or communication difficulties.
Language for Learning is managed by a strategic group with representatives from both health and education within Worcestershire. The group also includes an independent consultant.
We have teams of trainers in Worcestershire, Dudley, Cornwall, Kent & Solihull.Principles
- Language learning should be an integral part of the national curriculum.
- The most effective way of supporting pupils is through a collaborative approach.
- Training should be collaborative, i.e. everyone should be trained together. This provides the opportunity to develop shared thinking, understanding and plan future action.
- Training courses have been developed and are delivered in partnership by a specialist teacher and a speech and language therapist.
- Practice is based not only upon a sound theoretical understanding of language development, but also knowledge of the national curriculum and what is possible within a mainstream setting.
